Consultant - Hand & Microsurgery, Department of Orthopaedics, Aster Medcity, Cochin, India.
Aster Medcity is a tertiary care center with bed strength of 670. Main thrust of the hospital is orthopaedic surgery. Orthopaedic Department has 7 consultants with different subspeciality , including myself. The subspecialies are hand surgery, pediatric Orthopedics,orthopedic oncology, foot &ankle surgery, arthroplasty and arthroscopy. It is a National Board of Examinations, India accredited center for orthopedic training. We have 9 DNB (Ortho) post graduates, making it a prestigious unit . I joined as a consultant in hand and microsurgery. The work spectrum includes more of elective surgeries and poly trauma. I have performed brachial plexus surgeries-repairs and reconstructions,replantations, different types of flaps, various tendon& nerve repairs ,reconstructions,tendon transfers, endoscopic carpal tunnel releases and wrist arthroscopies.

St James Hospital is a tertiary care center with bed strength of 500. Main thrust of the hospital is orthopaedic surgery. Orthopaedic Department has 9 full time consultants and 6 DNB (Ortho) post graduates, making it a prestigious unit and one of the biggest units in South India. I joined as a consultant in hand and microsurgery. Later hand and microsurgery was made into a unit under orthopedic surgery. I was in charge of Unit of Hand Surgery and Reconstructive Microsurgery. I have performed brachial plexus surgeries-repairs and P A reconstructions,replantations, free flaps, various tendon& nerve repairs ,reconstructions,tendon transfers, endoscopic carpal tunnel releases and wrist arthroscopy. Fractures of hand and wrist was treated with utmost care.
PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE DETAILS
Clinical Observer – Institut De La Main, Clinique Bizet, Paris, France
Institut De La Main is the biggest hand surgery group in Europe. Founder director of the group was the legendary hand surgeon Dr Raol Tubiana. The institute has pioneers in the subspecialities of hand surgery ; pediatric hand, brachial plexus, wrist arthroscopy, spastic upper limb, hand trauma etc. I was fortunate to be trained under Prof Christophe Mathoulin. The training included wrist arthroscopy and endoscopic carpal tunnel and cubital tunnel releases. Prof Mathoulin has probably one of the most surgical numbers on wrist arthroscopy.

Hand and Microsurgery Department in Christian Medical College is one among the oldest in the world, started in 1951 by the legendary surgeon Prof Paul Wilson Brand. Department is considered as one of the pioneer unit and among the best centers around the globe. I belong to the first batch of two students selected for the Dr MGR Medical University recognized fellowship in CMC Vellore. These 2 seats are the only available training seats in India, recognized by university in medical college. As a fellow, I have been assigned a weekly schedule supervised by Prof Binu P Thomas, which includes out patient clinics, day care surgeries, emergency calls, main operations. The tertiary care hospital is about 3000 bedded and daily input of patient’s s around 200 in Hand and Reconstructive Microsurgery clinic. Weekly surgical cases average upto 120 in number. On call days an average of 8-10 cases per day are done on emergency basis.
Fellow in Hand and Microsurgery, Ganga Hospital, Coimbatore, India. In 2010, there were 2 FNB(Hand & Microsurgery) seats granted by National Board of Examinations, New Delhi.
Both seats were allotted to Ganga Hospital Coimbatore. The tertiary care hospital is about 420 bedded and daily input of patient’s s around 160 in Hand and Reconstructive Microsurgery clinic. As a fellow, I have been assigned a weekly schedule supervised by Dr S Rajasabapathy, which includes out patient clinics, day care surgeries, emergency calls, main operations. Weekly surgical cases average upto 240 in number. On call days an average of 30-35 cases per day are done on emergency basis. I have done one three local and two national presentation during my tenure so far. One original article is in the process of review by an indexed journal. As a part of my fellowship I have completed my basic and advanced microsurgery courses conducted in the hospital.

After my Post Graduation training in Orthopedics, I was fortunate to join back the institution. KMC Mangalore has 1400 bedded Govt Wenlock Hospital and 1200 Bedded Kasturba Medical College Hospitals attached to it. There are 100 beds in Govt Wenlock Hospital for orthopedic patients. I worked under Prof B Jagannath Kamath in Govt Wenlock Hospital. Prof Jagannath Kamath is a passionate teacher and excellent surgeon. He is a trained Hand and Microsurgeon who nurtured my interest in Hand and Microsurgery. For 6 months I worked as Senior Resident. Subsequently I was promoted as Assistant Professor. 6 months after my promotion I had to leave the institution to join for my FNB training in Ganga Hospital, Coimbatore,India.

1. Clinical and MEP correlation of rhomboids as determinant of intact C5 root in brachial plexus injuries. Done as dissertation during Hand Surgery & Reconstructive Microsugery training in Christian Medical College, Vellore. Done as dissertation to Dr MGR Medical University.2013.
2. Assessment of Functional outcome in Major Replantations of Upper Limb. Done as Dissertation during FNB training in Ganga Hospital, Coimbatore. 2012.
3. A study of bacteriological flora in osteomyelitis and antibiotic sensitivity. Submitted as dissertation to Manipal University. April 2009.
