TENDON RECONSTRUCTION
WHAT IS A TENDON ?
A tendon is a fibrous connective tissue which attaches muscle to bone. A tendon serves to move the bone or structuren.
WHAT IS A TENDON GRAFT ?
In certain severe injuries, there may be loss of tendon tissue.
In such circumstances tendons move away from the point of injury and there may be a gap between tendon ends.
Tendon ends are bridged with tendon grafts .
Tendon grafts are obtained from other tendons who have less important function or are unimportant .
Common areas of tendon graft harvest are the forearm ( palmaris longus tendon ) , thigh ( Tensor fascia lata ) and leg ( extensor tendons ).
WHAT IS TENDON RECONSTRUCTION ?
In severe injuries there may be loss of tendon tissues. The lost tendon tissues are reconstructed with tendon graft. The whole procedure is known as tendon reconstruction.
