Polydactyly

WHAT IS POLYDACTYLY

Polydactyly is the presence of more than five fingers in hand.

WHAT ARE THE TYPES OF POLYDACTYLY ?

The extra digit may be on the side of the thumb or little finger ( also known as border polydactyly) or at the center ( central polydactyly). Most common central polydactyly is duplication of ring finger. Duplication of middle finger and index finger are less common. The extra digit may be well developed or rudimentary.

TREATMENT

A rudimentary extra finger may be removed without surgery. A well developed extra finger may need surgery for its removal. After the removal of the extra finger, adjacent normal fingers will require ligament repair or reconstruction for stability and normal use.
